Following the recent court ruling by the high court judge, Justice Mandala Mambulasa, National Registration Bureau (NRB) has shown adherence to the ruling as it aims to start registering people in Malawi Electoral Commission voter registration centers across the country.
During the press briefing on Friday, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland security responsible for NRB Mphatso Sambo, stated that National Registration Bureau has complied to the court ruling for the Bureau to start registering new applicants and all citizens who are eligible to register.
He also discouraged registration of people who have already registered and mentioned that it’s against the law to give false information in order for one to register. “If a person is found registering for the second time, the person will be persecuted by following the laws of Malawi.it will delay the process of voter registration because it will need National Registration Bureau (NRB) to clear the data of that person” he emphasized.
“The Bureau is continuing registering people in all district’s registration offices and some post offices across the country so that everyone has access to national identity card’’ Sambo added.
Commenting on a number of developments which have happened at the Bureau, Sambo assured Malawians that the Bureau has managed to deploy a adequate staff to all registration centers aiming to shorten the distances for a lot of people to register. Sambo was quick to say, the Bureau has purchased other verification machines(tablets)for the continuation of the process.
In his remarks, one of the social commentators in the country Ceazar Kondowe has welcomed the development by stating that, it’s a very good initiative that NRB has complied to the ruling in totality because it will allow people who were not registered in the previous exercise to register and that adding new tablets to the Bureau will help to quicken the work for one to be verified.
