The National Registration Bureau (NRB) commenced the registration and issuance of Birth and Death Certificates in Malawi on 1st August, 2015 taking over the function from the Registrar General’s Office. This function has been under the Registrar General’s Office from 1904 to 31st July, 2015. Under the National Registration Act of 2010, registration for birth and death certificates is universal and compulsory.
2. RECRUITMENT OF CONTRACTOR TO PROCURE AND INSTALL NATIONAL REGISTRATION FOR ID EQUIPMENT – 10th March, 2016
The Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security on Thursday, 10th March, 2016 signed a contract with a firm called SELP SAS, Route de Riberac, France for the supply, delivery, installation, commissioning and training of NRB staff on Proof of Concept for the National Registration and Identification System (NRIS) for the Republic of Malawi.
The total sum of the contract is USD 1,265,877.36 (USD One million two hundred sixty five thousand eight hundred seventy seven and thirty six cents) and will be implemented in about four months from the date of signing.
3. COMMENCEMENT OF REGISTRATION FOR NATIONAL ID IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THE EXERCISE (PROOF OF CONCEPT) – 27th June, 2016
The long wait for Malawians to have National IDs is finally over as the National Registration Bureau (NRB) started the registration on Monday, 27th June, 2016. The first group to be registered was the Members of Parliament taking advantage of the 2016/207Budget Sitting underway in Lilongwe. Next to follow in the first phase of the exercise is registration of Principal Secretaries, Directors, NRB Staff and other VIP’s before NRB takes the exercise to 11 selected districts for the Proof of Concept. It is expected that about 6000 Malawians will be registered in this first phase.
