The National Registration Bureau (NRB) has on Friday, 12th May 2023 launched distribution of birth certificates to all children registered during the pilot mass child registration exercise which took place between October and November 2022.
Speaking during the launch ceremony at Karonga Community ground, Minister of Homeland Security Dr. Ken Zikhale Ng’oma said Birth Certificates are fundamental in protecting the rights of the children.
The minister therefore called upon all parents, traditional leaders, government ministries, departments, agencies and all stakeholders to vigorously mainstream birth registration messages in all undertakings to safeguard the identity of Malawian children.
The launch ceremony was patronized by Minister of Education, Madalisto Kambauwa Wirima, Deputy Minister of Health, Harima Alima Daudi, and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Culture and National Unity, Owen Chomanika.
In their remarks, the minister and deputy ministers pledged to support the work of NRB at all levels.
“As ministry of education, we will discuss on how best to use Birth Certificates during the enrolment of school learners,” said Wirima.
Before the launch ceremony, NRB oriented all village heads in Karonga on the distribution exercise as well as continuous birth and death registration especially in communities.
NRB continues to register all children born in health facilities before parents are discharged across the country.
Distribution of Birth Certificates for parents and guardians in Lilongwe rural east and Mwanza districts will commence after the Karonga event.
